As a business owner, you’ve got big dreams. But sometimes it’s incredibly difficult to stay focused on what we want to achieve as we get caught in the day-to-day hustle of being an entrepreneur and balancing it with our personal lives.
The key? ACCOUNTABILITY. Staying accountable to ourselves is easier said than done, but over time I’ve found three primary ways to keep myself on track and make sure I’m doing things every day to further my big goals.
#1: SET GOALS & MAKE A PLAN
In both life and business, the first step to making your dreams come true is deciding what you really want. If you want to scale your business while only working 20 hours a week, you can — but you NEED a strategy to make it happen. Make a plan for every day, week, and month to ensure your time spent working on your business is strategic (download my free printable daily planner here — it’s a HUGE help!). Know why you’re doing the things you’re doing and write them out. When you have a task list, write down WHY each of the tasks important to complete. Start connecting the relevance of every task, whether it’s mundane or big, to your purpose and your bigger goals. Reminding yourself of your why will help you feel accountable to completing them.
#2: BUILD A COMMUNITY
Your ideal clients are a community you build. When it comes to engaging with your community and the services or products you offer them, you set the narrative and the expectations — and of course, you don’t want to let them down! You don’t owe them anything, and you can change anything you want in your business anytime you want — but having a strong relationship with your community makes you WANT to consistently engage and show up for them, and keep evolving your offerings in order to best serve them. After all, it feels great to show up for and serve the people you care about.
#3: FIND A BUSINESS MENTOR
Whether it’s a local networking group, a mastermind, or a coaching group, finding people who are doing what you do (or what you want to do) is an amazing way to stay accountable to your business. Being able to check in, get ideas, receive feedback and outside perspectives will ensure you consistently work on developing and evolving your business, not only ensuring you get your important day-to-day tasks done but also adding YEARS onto the life of your business. As a coach myself, I’m a bit biased here but the truth is, the most successful people get expert help to improve — think of athletes hiring trainers or Fortune 500 CEOs hiring consultants.
